Underage
drinking is a major problem in Maricopa County. According to a 2008 Arizona Youth Survey, 53% of 8th grade students consumed
alcohol and that number rises to 89% by 12th grade. These startling
figures have alarmed many residents and the community coalition, C.O.P.E. - Community, Outreach, Prevention and Education.
The C.O.P.E. coalition is a grant-funded group of dedicated community
members focused on reducing alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use by youth
in the Maryvale area of West Phoenix. C.O.P.E.'s vision is to establish a healthy community that
supports youth and families. C.O.P.E.'s Youth Council, comprised of teens from all over
Maryvale, has began a
comprehensive media campaign to alert adults that providing alcohol to minors
is illegal and dangerous. They have created door
hangers and magnet distribution materials, as well as a shopping cart slide that was
placed in two Fry’s locations.
The public needs to be educated on the consequences of underage
drinking and the ramifications of providing alcohol to minors. Furnishing or
selling alcohol to minors is illegal and those convicted can face fines,
possible jail time, and other legal consequences.
