The 1990's

In 1991, the station joined CNN Radio as a member station. Edens broadcasting sold KOY AM and FM for $7 million to Sundance Broadcasting Inc. in September 1993. Sundance president Michael Jorgenson then became President and General Manager of KOY. This transaction gave Phoenix its first duopoly, as Sundance was the owner of KYOT and KZON (FM).

In May 1995, Terrance Hardin was named Vice President and General Manager of KOY. The station changed hands twice within six months; first from Sundance to Colfax Broadcasting in August 1996, which was then absorbed by Chancellor Broadcasting in January, 1997.

Chancellor Broadcasting then merged with Evergreen Media and became Chancellor Media, Inc. in October 1997. Chancellor Media, Inc. became AMFM, Inc. and General Manager Marv Nyren, was appointed as head of KOY in March, 2000, while Terrance Hardin was transferred to an AMFM owned station in Chicago. In April 1999, KOY’s frequency was changed from the long standing 550 kHz to 1230 kHz. KOY is Arizona’s oldest continuously licensed AM broadcast station, operated on 1230 kHz with a day and night power of 1000 watts (non-directional).
